Position Description

Assistant Nurse Director of Perioperative Services 

Summary of Position:

The Assistant Nurse Director of Perioperative Services will report directly to the AVPs of Perioperative Services and will align and support the role accordingly. This role will focus on clinical staff development as well as business/ administrative duties. The position will overlap in schedule to ensure all shifts are supported clinically.

The role requires participation in patient care by serving as a role model, a clinical consultant, and an educator to staff and/or patients/families on a 24 hour basis.

The Assistant Nurse Director of Perioperative Services will maintain competence in adult learning theory, presentation skills, competency validation, age specific competence related to patient population of assigned area(s), unit specific, high risk/low frequency skills, and mandatory testing skills for areas of responsibility.

The position requires collaboration with all Team members and Organization clinical faculty to ensure that policies and clinical practice are aligned. Additionally, the candidate will demonstrate a sound knowledge base of AORN and regulatory agencies guidelines and recommendations.

 Through the leadership of the The Assistant Nurse Director of Perioperative Services 

Members of the Care Center Team will understand and demonstrate best practice principles.

The candidate will represent the Perioperative Care Center at committee meetings which directly impact the continued high quality learning and ongoing growth and development of the department’s team members.


The Assistant Nurse Director of Perioperative Services will also function as the Laser Safety Nurse and will assist with the co-ordination of new surgical specialty programs.

 Specific Job Responsibilities



  1. Exhibits a professional demeanor when interacting with all customers.

  4. Demonstrate an ability to lead effective teams to accomplish departmental, divisional and organizational objectives as directed by Perioperative Department’s Director.
  5. Participates in developing performance improvement plans in conjunction with Directors.
  6. Participates in associate preparedness for regulatory audits and surveys.
  7. Maintains and demonstrates the appropriate technical and / or professional knowledge base and certification required by the position.
  8. Assist with staffing, hiring, recruiting and evaluating of clinical personnel.
  9. Provides administrative support to staff to ensure efficient work flow, adequate staffing levels, resolution of difficult problems, monitoring of quality assurance measures, and enforcement of departmental policies.
  10. Conceptualizes, develops, and provides direction and support to staff to implement total quality management measures and customer service strategies in all department activities.
  11. Creates and foster a work environment conducive to productive performance, job satisfaction and staff retention.
  12. Developing effective working relationships with all members of the Perioperative Team and Ancillary Departments.

Educational Development:

  1. Plans and presents educational offerings for professional development.
  2. Develops educational curricula.
  3. Supports inter-professional education/collaboration.
  4. Develops educational plans for staff with specific learning needs.
  5. Adjusts content and teaching strategy based on learner knowledge and expertise allowing for evaluation and adjustment of teaching methods accordingly.
  6. Promotes critical thinking and problem solving.
  7. Collaborate with staff for policy development, implementation and compliance and uses AORN and regulatory standards and regulations as a framework for practice.
  8. Collaborates with nursing leadership and staff in the development and implementation of educational programs.
  9. Integrates SBH vision, mission and values within the clinical framework.

Fosters a climate conducive to learning and facilitates the professional growth of others:

  1. Serves as a mentor and/or role model for other professionals.
  2. Consults with others on the development of educational programs.
  3. Facilitates and fosters team building.
  4. Encourages participation in educational opportunities within and outside the institution.
  5. Promotes opportunities for advancement, recognition and retention of the staff.


Evaluates educational programs in terms of their impact on the learner, patient and organization:

  1. Follows-up with executive or administrative leaders to assess if business and/or operational goals were met and
  2. Ensures preparation of administrative reports.
  3. Uses program evaluations to guide the restructuring and planning for future learning.
  4. Ensures that presenters of educational programs including equipment and supply company representatives are vetted. Solicits audience feedback and return demonstrations to ensure comprehension of the presentation .
  5. Monitors validity and reliability of testing materials.
  6. Participates in the development and writing of policies and procedures in conjunction with the subject matter experts.


Minimum Qualifications


Education/ Training and Experience:


  • Current New York State Registered Professional Nurse License required
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing
  • Three years of active nursing experience required
  • One year of relevant teaching experience preferred
  • CNOR preferred or obtained within six months of starting in the position
  • ACLS and PALS certified
